You don't need an estate agent at all. The only thing they are good for is that they help you market your property. Besides, there are a number of people that still visit their local estate agent to shop for properties - but that said, things are changing. As more and more people become internet friendly, they not do most of their searches online.
In short to answer your question - no you don't need a real estate agent.
